Basic Beliefs of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
We observe the Lord's Supper Weekly
The central focus of the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) is the Lord's Supper. Through communion we are connected to one another
and to God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Believer's baptism by immersion
Following the earliest tradition of the church, we
demonstrate our faith in God through baptism when one understands this
commitment, letting the waters of our baptism give witness to God's grace upon
us.
Open membership
Individuals come to the Disciples of Christ from many
traditions, we do not insist that our baptismal practice is the only one that
is valid. We know that baptism is God's action far more than our own.
Openness to interpretation and a lack of creeds as tests of
faith
We celebrate diversity and do not expect everyone's
interpretation of the Bible or the Christian life to be identical.
The importance of scripture
We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and is best
understood when studied within an open community of faith. Diversity offers a rich context to
fully appreciate scripture.
Our polity or structure is congregational
Congregations are given authority regarding their life and
ministries give the local congregation authority over their life and ministries. Resources are shared among
congregations and the wider church as the mission of the church goes beyond the
doorsteps of the local congregation.
Women in leadership and as ordained clergy
We believe that God provides spiritual gifts to all and do
not restrict any office or role in the life of the church by gender.
An emphasis on lay leadership
Lay people (non-clergy) are encouraged to do all things in
the church, including serving at
the Lord's Supper. Aside from performing weddings which are regulated by the
province and baptisms, church life is mostly lay lead.
Clergy Expectations
Educational and professional standards for clergy both licensed
and ordained are important for the Disciples of Christ. We hold our clergy to
ethical accountability through denominational oversight.
A passion for peace and justice
Through various ecumenical organizations, Disciples actively
work to restore peace and justice throughout the world as God created the
world.
